Shopworkers could be among the first people to be vaccinated in the next stage of the coronavirus vaccination programme, health secretary Matt Hancock has said.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Hancock thanked shopworkers for their service during the pandemic, and said ministers are “looking very carefully at those professions that will need to be prioritised in phase two of the prioritisation programme”.

He added: “We’ll look at of course teachers and police and others, but also we’ll look at shopworkers and we’ll make those decisions based on data.”

A new petition asking for frontline retail staff to be prioritised for the Covid-19 vaccine has been launched. The petition had reached 8,375 signatures at the time of writing.
