Walmart’s Next Medical Breakthrough: Selling Health Insurance

Walmart has made no secret of its ambitions to become a player in the health care industry. Just last month, the retail giant acquired some assets and personnel from CareZone, a mobile app designed to help consumers manage medications and chronic illnesses. In September 2019, Walmart opened a primary care clinic offering a range of physical and mental health services in Dallas, Ga., and it has since opened three more clinics, according to CNBC.

Now the retailer is moving from health care into the complex world of health insurance, beginning with plans that supplement Medicare. According to a job posting on its web site, Walmart is seeking to hire licensed health insurance agents in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Walmart filed papers in June with the Arkansas Secretary of State to establish “Walmart Insurance Services LLC,” according to MedCity News.

“Yes, you read that right, Walmart now has an insurance agency,” reads the job listing. “Walmart strives to be a center of wellbeing in the communities we serve, and we have a unique, brand-new opportunity to help millions of people find the best Medicare insurance available.”

While Walmart has previously teamed up with health insurance provider Humana on a branded prescription drug plan, this appears to be the first time the retailer has tried to move into directly selling health insurance plans to consumers or businesses.
