Convenience retailers have been expressing dismay and concern at the news that National Lottery products will be on sale in all 900 Aldi stores from next month.

One retailer told our WhatsApp group: “So that’s another kick while some are down. It’s amazing they can’t fix broken terminal or replace them and starting a new account is near impossible. Then they magic 900 terminals out of thin air.”

Another retailer said: “Same as delivery apps offering specialist terms to discounters. It’s one rule for small businesses and another for corporate.”

A store owner added: “It is so frustrating. The discounters are all about speed of service – they have no dialogue with customers. How are they going to give Rita all her combinations, check her selection, tell her she needs another number, and wish her good luck?”

In response, NFRN national president, Stuart Reddish, said: “This move will dilute sales across the whole retail estate.  The more products available in the multiple outlets, the less likely National Lottery players will visit their local independent retailer to pick up their tickets or scratchcards.

“We will work closely with Camelot to understand the rationale for this move. As national president, my remit is to look after independent retailers.”
