The Sun’s weekday issues will see a 5p increase and weekends will see a 10p increase. It also affects the Scottish editions of The Sun and The Sun on Sunday.

The move is forecast to drive an extra £25m revenue through retailers’ tills and an additional £5.5m in margin over the next 12 months.

The NFRN has welcomed the move. National president, Stuart Reddish, said: “We are pleased that unlike other publishers of late that News UK is accompanying its price rises with pro-rata terms.

“Members will be relieved it recognises the extremely demanding trading environment that independent retailers are currently operating in, along with an understanding that margins must be maintained when cover prices rise. ”
