When people think of Amazon Prime Day, home projection may not be the first tech category that comes to mind but the etailer, online retail in general in fact, has grown to become a key channel for projector sales.

Worldwide dedicated home projector sales grew 15% globally in 2018 (excluding Screenless TV in China), as outlined in Futuresources’s ‘Worldwide Quarterly Front Projection Tracker’. Amazon Prime Day 2019 was a great opportunity to drive home projector sales further. The event saw epic deals for home projectors from several top brands, including: BenQ, Viewsonic, Optoma, and others. How did this affect online retail overall? Futuresource explains the impact of Amazon Prime Day on projector pricing across other online stores.

The impact of this month’s Amazon Prime Day on competing online retailers was bigger than ever, as approximately 250 retailers offered short-term discounts in a bid to compete. This is compared to around 190 online retailers last year, and up from just 7 retailers on Amazon’s first Prime Day in 2015.

One of the leading discounts during this year’s Prime Day was Optoma’s UHD51A 4K UHD Smart Home Theatre projector, which was discounted by 24 %. BenQ’s W1210ST 1080p CineHome was available for a £179 discount – representing a very attractive price for a short throw HD projector. ViewSonic’s X10-4K 4K UHD was 30% off.

The deals on Amazon Prime Day mainly focused on home projectors. However, thanks to Futuresource’s Daily Pricing Tracker, it is evident that the wider impact of this event extends to B2B solutions, with notable discounts seen on even high-bright projectors. One example is the price of Optoma’s DH1011i, which fell approximately 10% this week across the EMEA region.

As the importance of the online channel grows across every projector product segment, Futuresource will continue to monitor daily ASP fluctuations against quarterly shipment analysis. As the projector industry faces mounting threats from competing display technologies, understanding drivers within the pockets of opportunity still present is more important than ever.
