Entries open for Raj Aggarwal trophy to reward outstanding community retailers

The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) is encouraging retailers to submit entries for a new trophy marking the legacy of independent retailer Raj Aggarwal.

Aggarwal, who owned stores in Wigston, Leicester and Hackenthorpe near Sheffield died aged 51 last year after contracting coronavirus.

The new trophy will be awarded to the retailer who is judged to have been exceptional in community retailing and helping their fellow retailers.

Any size of independent retailer is eligible to enter, for which they must submit a short film (no more than five minutes), which will show what they have done in the past year to support their local community and fellow retailers.

The judges will be Sunita Aggarwal – Raj’s wife; Jonathan James, managing director of James Convenience Retail; Avtar Sidhu, owner of Budgens Kenilworth: and James Lowman, ACS chief executive.

The criteria for the award will be

  • Engagement of colleagues in conceiving and delivering activity
  • Impact on the local community
  • Sustainability of activity
  • Overall work to support other retailers

James Lowman said: “Raj was the epitome of a community-minded retailer and greatest supporter of fellow community retailers.

“We announced the Raj Aggarwal trophy in his honour at last year’s Heart of the Community conference and are pleased to welcome entries to its first ever award.

The deadline for entries is 13 September and entries must be sent to Sarah C Johnson at the ACS.
