The straws were first trialled in Tesco store in May 2020 but are now a “permanent feature” across all Ribena carton in all stores from this month, with a full roll-out expected by April.

The move will “save up to 16 tonnes of plastic from being produced per year”, as part of Ribena’s “ambition to reach 100% sustainable packaging by 2030”.

Ribena said plastic straws are hard to recycle in the UK due to their size, and if consumers do not push the straw into the empty carton they can get lost in the recycling process.
