A retailer has made the switch from one symbol group to another and opened the updated store five weeks later – just in time for the Christmas sales rush.

Remarkably, the store stopped trading for just three hours during the transition process – ensuring minimum disruption for the local community in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.

Tarsem Singh started considering moving the Spar outlet he was buying to Nisa Retail at the start of November and, within days, meetings were held with its retail development manager and store team to discuss how it could be done.

The purchase of the Ashbourne Road store was completed in the third week in November and at the same time he installed Nisa’s Epositive Evolution system and trained his staff on the system.

A team of merchandisers arrived soon after and spent four days adapting the interior of the store to reflect Nisa’s planograms, focusing on improving the fresh offer while also introducing Co-op own-label brands across all categories.

Last week, with the Spar range and all branding removed, the latest Nisa promotions were set up and the rebranded Nisa Local opened its doors.

Singh, who also operates a forecourt store, said: “The stock in the store had been really run down and it was almost empty, so we got a delivery from Nisa immediately and the first 700 cases didn’t even half fill the store!

“We now have a really good range of fresh and grocery and our customers are really happy with it.

“The local people who come in regularly said they haven’t seen the store looking like this for 30 years.

“We’re focusing on getting the customers back through the doors, showing them what we have got to offer and ensuring they keep coming back.”
