Sainsbury’s reports strong Christmas performance

Sainsbury’s has posted a 9.3% year-on-year increase in sales over the Christmas period, from 1 November to 2 January.

The supermarket giant said that during the festive period sales of its premium Taste the Difference range increased by 11%. Premium champagne sales were up 52%, Taste the Difference party food was “popular” throughout December and people did more home baking than usual with mincemeat sales up 24%. It also sold a record number of steaks.

The retailer also reported a record number of online orders, delivering 1.1 million orders in the 10 days to Christmas, double the number of last year.

Sainsbury’s also reported that grocery sales grew 7.4% year-on-year in the 15 weeks to 2 January, with online groceries up 128%.

Simon Roberts, chief executive of J Sainsbury, said: “At Christmas we focused on offering our customers great prices, great quality and great service and I feel really proud that Sainsbury’s customer satisfaction scores were the highest ever in the key Christmas week. We have started the new year with a strong value offer, with Price Lock currently on over 2,500 everyday products.”
