Walmart Tests Secure, Climate-Controlled Smart Boxes for Grocery Delivery

Walmart is pushing the envelope for grocery delivery with its launch of temperature-controlled smart boxes that can keep items in three separate sections during the delivery process. This tool will let the retailer pack pantry, refrigerated and frozen items as a single unit while keeping each at the correct temperature.

The pilot, which will launch in Bentonville, Ark. in spring 2021, will offer participating customers grocery deliveries using secure, climate-controlled boxes powered by HomeValet. The smart boxes remain secure until it is time for the customer to pick up their goods so that they don’t need to plan their days around delivery windows.

The test joins a number of delivery pilots currently underway at Walmart, including autonomous vehicles in Arkansas, a partnership with Instacart in California and Oklahoma and an upcoming test of all-electric self-driving vehicles in Arizona.
