Shell is set to buy Ubitricity, the UK’s biggest electric vehicle charging network, for an undisclosed sum.

EV charge point

The acquisition will allow Shell to expand its charging network, which currently has more than  1,000 charge points. Ubitricity works with local authorities to integrate charging points into existing physical infrastructure, such as lampposts.

István Kapitány, who heads Shell’s mobility business, said: “Working with local authorities, we want to support the growing number of Shell customers who want to switch [to an electric vehicle] by making it as convenient as possible for them.

“On-street options such as the lamp post charging offered by Ubitricity will be key for those who live and work in cities or have limited access to off-street parking.”

At the end of last year, the government announced the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles would be banned from 2030 rather than 2035.

The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval but is expected to complete later in 2021.
