FDA Recalling Eye Ointments Sold at Walmart and CVS Due to Sterility Issues

February 28, 2024

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled eye ointments sold at Walmart and CVS. The products come from the company Brassica Pharma Pvt. Ltd.

The company voluntarily recalled several brands of eye ointment products with expiration dates from February 2024 to September 2025. The products are being recalled due to a lack of sterility assurance at the facility, which was noted during an inspection conducted by the FDA, according to NorthJersey.com.

The recalled ointments include two products sold under Walmart’s brand, Equate. Products from CVS Health and AACE Pharmaceuticals are also affected. All products come in a cardboard box.

In the recall notice, the FDA wrote, “For those patients who use these products, there is a potential risk of eye infections or related harm. These products are intended to be sterile.” Additionally, they added, “Ophthalmic drug products pose a potential heightened risk of harm to users because drugs applied to the eyes bypass some of the body’s natural defenses.”

The recalled ointments include:

  • Equate Lubricant Eye Ointment, 3.5-gram tube, with UPC code 681131395298
  • Equate Stye Lubricant Eye Ointment, 3.5-gram tube, with UPC code 681131395304
  • CVS Health Lubricant Eye Ointment, 3.5-gram tube, with UPC code 050428634141
  • Lubricant PM Ointment, 3.5-gram tube, with UPC code 371406124356, sold by AACE Pharmaceuticals

Brassica Pharma Pvt. Ltd. has not yet received any reports of adverse effects related to these products. Consumers should stop using the recalled eye ointments and may return any of the above-listed products to the place of purchase.
