North Carolina Attorney Takes Legal Action Against Contractor

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein has filed a lawsuit against Canary General Contracting and Design as well as its owners, Steven Sand and Khuneary Kim. The recent lawsuit, initiated on Monday, alleges that the company engaged in deceptive practices aimed at homeowners in Charlotte.

According to court documents, Canary purportedly operated as an unlicensed general contracting business, resulting in fraudulent activities against Charlotte residents. Stein underscored the gravity of the situation, highlighting how homeowners were left with unfinished or inadequately completed renovation projects after entrusting Canary with their money.

The lawsuit outlines a series of grievances, including delays, incomplete work, and failure to obtain requisite permits and approvals. Canary purportedly accepted advance payments without fulfilling contractual obligations, leaving behind work that was subpar and unsafe and failing to meet building codes.

Sand and Kim are further accused of demanding payments exceeding the agreed amounts stipulated in contracts, compounding the financial losses experienced by homeowners.

The Consumer Protection Division of the Department of Justice has received numerous complaints against Canary, with reported financial damages exceeding $250,000.

In response to the lawsuit, Stein also filed a restraining order to safeguard the interests of affected homeowners.

This legal action follows years of complaints and investigations into similar contractor-related issues. Homeowners have voiced frustration over perceived inaction by local law enforcement and the North Carolina Department of Justice, leading to calls for legislative reforms to shield consumers from unscrupulous contractors.

After a thorough investigation into the allegations against Canary, the lawsuit was filed to hold the company accountable for its actions. The court documents detail instances where Canary failed to deliver promised services, leaving homeowners in distress and financial jeopardy.
