Chinese Online Retailer Pinduoduo Has a ‘Hyperaggressive’ Culture With Hours Surpassing a ‘996’ Schedule, Analysts Write

August 14, 2023

Chinese online retailer Pinduoduo, and its U.S. sister company Temu, have been associated with an intense workplace culture, described as “hyperaggressive,” similar to China’s infamous “996” work culture (9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week), according to Bernstein analysts. PDD Holdings, which owns Pinduoduo, launched Temu in the U.S. and has seen its performance exceed expectations, reaching an estimated $13 billion in gross merchandise value this year. While the “9127” culture comparison (9 a.m. to 12 a.m., seven days a week) was made in jest, the analysts still note an aggressive work culture and high staff turnover at Pinduoduo.
