Walmart Rolls Out Geek Squad-Style Tech Support Service Nationally

Walmart Tech Services

Walmart is taking a swipe at Best Buy with the rollout of its new Tech Services offering, which includes 24/7 remote support, device repair and setup services, both in stores and in homes.

Walmart originally began testing the program in select stores by offering both consumer electronics and technology services to its customers. Following a successful pilot, Walmart is now rolling out the offering nationally.

The suite of services is being offered through an exclusive five-year partnership with cybersecurity company McAfee and technology solution provider True Network Solutions. Customers can choose from a range of à la carte services or sign up for a Tech Support and Security membership for $89.99 per year. Membership includes:

  • one year of McAfee virus protection;
  • one year of tech coaching by phone;
  • unlimited virus removal;
  • unlimited 24/7 tech support, troubleshooting and repairs; and
  • unlimited PC tune-ups.

The launch comes just a few months after Best Buy rolled out its own membership program, which combines its Geek Squad tech support services with free shipping. Walmart isn’t the first retailer to try to take a bite out of Best Buy’s services apple. In 2017, Amazon launched a tech support service to help customers understand and set up their smart home with a focus on Alexa, and Staples now also offers a range of tech support services.
