Target and Walmart have found that consumers are cutting back on discretionary purchases in categories including apparel and consumer electronics. At the same time, purchases of everyday staples are holding up even with rising prices. Lowe’s and Home Depot have seen a drop in the amount of money that consumers are purchasing for home improvement projects. This has been offset by strength among the professional construction customers.
