Sam’s Club Innovates Customer Experience With AI Exit Tech
May 1, 2024
Sam’s Club has rolled out AI-powered exit technology at over 120 locations, marking a significant advancement in retail customer service. Since its debut at CES in January, this innovative solution has addressed a common concern among members — waiting in line for receipt verification at the exit.
In just four months, Sam’s Club has achieved a remarkable feat, deploying this technology in 20% of its clubs. This rapid implementation sets a new standard in the retail industry for member-facing AI applications, surpassing the efforts of other retailers.
The impact of this technology is immediate and tangible. In clubs where it’s deployed, over half of members experience a seamless exit process, resulting in a 23% faster checkout. Sam’s Club distinguishes itself by not only scaling this technology but also developing it in-house, directly addressing member needs.
By utilizing technology to enhance member experiences, Sam’s Club builds on its existing digital solutions like Scan & Go, providing a more convenient shopping journey. Todd Garner, chief product officer, emphasizes the company’s commitment to revolutionizing checkout experiences across its nearly 600 clubs nationwide.
The exit technology eliminates the need for manual receipt verification, allowing members to exit without delays. Through a combination of computer vision and digital innovation, payments are swiftly verified, freeing up staff to focus on enhancing member interactions.
“I’m incredibly proud of the innovation and dedication of our team to deploy this member experience technology at scale. Both exit technology and Scan & Go are driving new levels of convenience and raising member satisfaction among members. What distinguishes Sam’s Club from our competitors is our ability to seamlessly deploy this technology at scale across our nearly 600 clubs nationwide. Whether it’s a single item or a cartful, we’re revolutionizing the checkout experience.”
