Sooner or later, those searching for the best website builder will undoubtedly come across – especially if you’re a beginner. Newbies flock to Wix for its intuitive drag-and-drop editor, helpful documentation, and 800+ website templates!

But Wix is far more than just its beautiful interface. It also boasts various pricing tiers, handy email functionality, social media ads, analytics and reports, and even eCommerce.

But is the website builder any good for merchants and site owners in Canada? In this article, we’ll look at what Canadian users should consider before settling on a Wix account, how their pricing works, and how to get the best deal.

Letโ€™s get started!

Wix’s Pricing Plans

Wix customers in Canada can choose from a total of nine pricing plans.

Itโ€™s also worth noting that although Wix displays the pricing on its site per month, what you’re actually seeing is their costs when billed annually.

You can unlock savings by opting to purchase two or even three years upfront. Paying per month, however, could get considerably more expensive.

The annual costs are as follows:

For Website Plans:

  • Connect: CAD 7.50 per month to connect a custom domain
  • Combo: CAD 15 per month for personal websites and portfolios
  • Unlimited: CAD 20 per month for Entrepreneurs and Freelancers
  • VIP: CAD 44 per month for priority support

For Business and eCommerce Plans:

  • Business Basic: CAD 28 per month; ideal for small businesses looking to start accepting online payments and launch a simple eCommerce store
  • Business Unlimited: CAD 36 per month for growing online stores generating more significant revenue
  • Business VIP: CAD 49 per month for those building a large eCommerce website and need more customer engagement features

There’s also a custom-priced Enterprise plan for significantly larger organizations and a free Wix plan if youโ€™re just starting out and looking to test the waters.

A Brief Overview of Wix.com

Wix is one of the more affordable website building platforms on the market, with plans to suit any type of creator. Pricing starts at only CAD 7.50 per month. Whatโ€™s most important, however, is that Wix offers a free plan where you can try the platform out for as long as youโ€™d like. This is a great way to explore Wix’s editor, choose a theme you want, and even build your website before it goes live.

Naturally, the free plan comes with limitations. For example, it’s hosted on a Wix subdomain, and ads appear on every page and the favicon. In addition, you only get 500MB of storage and bandwidth, and you canโ€™t take online payments. Customer support is also more limited, and you canโ€™t access Google Analytics.

That said, in the section below, weโ€™ll explore all of Wixโ€™s website plans and Wix eCommerce plans in more detail.

How Much Does Wix Cost In Canada?

Wix Website Plans

The Connect Plan

The most basic plan for CAD 7.50 per month is Wix’s Connect plan. Its goal is to help you boost the credibility of your personal site by allowing you to link up a custom domain. Unfortunately, a domain doesnโ€™t come included, so you’ll have to purchase one either from Wix or a third-party service.

This plan offers a little more bandwidth than the free plan with 1GB and 500 MB storage. However, it still displays Wix’s ads.

The Combo Plan

The Combo plan is Wixโ€™s most affordable, fully-branded plan. It’s ideal for personal websites and online portfolios. This is the package to opt into if you just want to upgrade from the free plan to remove the ads and connect your own domain.

The Combo plan comes with 2GB of bandwidth, 3GB of storage, and 30 minutes of video hosting. You can also access 24/7 customer care through phone support via a call-back service and email, and you’ll get a free SSL certificate for your site.

At annual billing, the Combo plan costs CAD 15 per month.

The Unlimited Plan

The Unlimited plan, despite its name, only increases your storage space to 10GB and gives you one hour of video storage. However, your site hosting will now benefit from unlimited bandwidth. Youโ€™ll also get $700 worth of ad vouchers, including Local Listing, Bing Ads and Google Ads.

You can also access the Site Booster app and Visitor Analytics. Both tools are free for the first year. After that, you’ll have to pay to continue using them.

For the Unlimited Plan, youโ€™ll pay CAD 20 per month when billed annually.

The VIP Plan

Finally, the VIP plan helps business websites with lots of content expand further. On top of everything in the previous plans, it unlocks 35 GB of storage and five hours of video hosting. Youโ€™ll also be able to access priority customer care and Wixโ€™s logo-making app to create a professional logo (including all the social media logo files youโ€™ll need).

The VIP plan costs CAD 44 per month when billed annually.

Wix Business and eCommerce Plans

The Business Basic Plan

The Business Basic Plan is the first package to unlock integrated eCommerce. When billed annually at CAD 28 per month, you can list unlimited products on your store and receive secure online payments.

Plus, customers can create accounts, you get access to abandoned cart recovery features, and you can trade on social channels. More specifically, you can integrate with Facebook and Instagram to sell your products there.

Business Basic users also get 20GB of storage space and five hours of video storage.

The Business Unlimited Plan

The Business Unlimited plan costs CAD 36 per month on annual billing. You unlock 35GB of storage, ten hours of video storage, and a range of extra eCommerce features for this price. For instance, Wix will automatically calculate your sales tax for up to 100 transactions per month. In addition, you can sell subscriptions, display pricing in multiple currencies, access advanced shipping features, and sell on some of the worldโ€™s biggest marketplaces.

Finally, youโ€™ll also benefit from drop shipping functionality via Modalyst for up to 250 products and product reviews by kudoBuzz for up to 1,000 reviews.

The Business VIP Plan

When billed annually, the Business VIP plan at CAD 49 per month is the most expensive plan advertised.

This plan offers unlimited video hosting, with a max of 50GB of website storage. Youโ€™ll also receive priority customer care and can drop ship unlimited products with Modalyst. You can also facilitate a total of 3,000 product reviews through kudoBuzz.

Finally, this plan enables you to run a loyalty program via Smile.io, where you can offer points, coupons, and discounts to build customer engagement.

Are There Additional Costs to Consider?

When purchasing software, we always hope prices pan out as advertised, and youโ€™ll have access to all the features you need. While that is primarily true of Wix, the platform, unfortunately, relies on many third-party services, which it only offers free for one year. As such, some additional costs might become relevant if you want to continue using those features in the future.

Domain Names

The first cost to think about is your domain name. Wix offers a domain free for one year when you opt into annual billing, but after that, youโ€™ll need to pay for your domain at the standard rates.

However, Wix allows you to buy your domain from a third-party provider and link it up, so you can shop around to find a cheaper offer.

On average, a .ca domain name will cost you CAD 10 to CAD 20 per year.

Premium Apps

Many Wix plans come with free access to a range of apps for one year. This includes:

  • The Site Booster app
  • The Visitor Analytics App
  • The Events Calendar App

Just for reference, after your year of free access is over, the Site Booster appโ€™s premium plan is $15 per month (approximately CAD 19.50), and Visitor Analytics start at roughly $11 per month (approximately CAD 14)

Email

You’ll also need to pay extra if you want an email domain that matches your website. Purchasing a custom email address through Google Workspace, as recommended by Wix, will be another $6 per month.

Wix Pricing Canada: FAQ

Can I Use a .CA Domain With Wix?

While you cannot purchase a .ca domain directly from Wix, you can do so from a third-party domain provider like GoDaddy or Namecheap. On any Wix premium plan, you can then link your custom domain to your Wix website.

Can I Change My Wix Plan at Any Time?

Wix allows you to change your paid plan at any point. For example, you can go from a monthly Unlimited plan to a monthly Combo plan or exchange your yearly Business Unlimited plan for a yearly Unlimited one. Of course, you’ll be charged an additional amount for the higher program.

How Long Are Wix Contracts?

By default, Wix displays its pricing for annual billing and recommends this as the best possible option. You can, however, also opt for monthly payments or choose to pay for two or three years in advance.

Itโ€™s important to note that Wix pushes you to choose its annual plan. Monthly payments are more expensive, which many customers donโ€™t expect when they first proceed with their purchase. However, paying for the whole year also unlocks freebies like a free domain for a year, premium apps like Site Booster and visitor Analytics, and ad vouchers.

So, to get the full advertised value of the platform, you might have to lock yourself into a longer contract than you are comfortable with.

How Can I Customize My Wix Store for the Canadian Market?

Wix makes it possible to customize your site to better suit the Canadian market. For starters, you can set a locale for your language, which means you can use Canadian English and display measurements using the Metric system. You can also set the display currency of your online store to Canadian dollars. However, this doesnโ€™t extend to the actual checkout, where your customers will be shown USD pricing.

Youโ€™ll also be able to set taxes manually, so you can collect provincial taxes more efficiently. Wix even enables you to display these tax estimates on the shopping cart page to offer better transparency to customers.

Can I Migrate My Wix Site Later?

When it comes to migrating your content, Wix is unfortunately not very flexible. The platform already demonstrates this by the inability to switch from one theme to another without losing your content. Furthermore, you canโ€™t comprehensively export your website. Therefore, if you ever want to leave Wix for another platform, you’ll have to start from scratch.

Is Wixโ€™s Pricing in Canada Different From the Pricing for the US?

Depending on a platformโ€™s infrastructure and services, it’s only natural for them to charge different prices for different locations worldwide. That said, you might be on the lookout for a service that performs as well in Canada as it does in the US.

Unfortunately, none of Wix’s plans offer unlimited storage in Canada – even your bandwidth is capped on cheaper plans. This isnโ€™t the case for US pricing, which might be a reason to shop around to see if there’s a website builder that imposes fewer limitations based on your location.

How Does Wix Pricing in Canada Compare?

Out of all the website builders on the market, Wix isn’t just one of the most affordable options, but it’s definitely one of the easiest to use. Its intuitive interface is unmatched by its competitors, and with over 800 beautiful themes, it’s one of the more flexible solutions.

That said, affordability and ease of use might not be your first priority. Not to mention, like any software, Wix comes with its own set of weaknesses. For example, it lacks advanced eCommerce features, and some argue it overly relies on costly third-party apps.

Where Wixโ€™s pricing ranges from CAD 7.50 to CAD 49, competitors are priced as follows:

  • Shopify: $29 to $299 per month (Approximately CAD 37.70 to CAD 388.90)
  • Weebly: CAD 0 to CAD 30 per month
  • WordPress.org: Free to download and use, but youโ€™ll need to purchase a domain, hosting, and any premium plugins you need
  • Squarespace: $16 to $49 per month (approximately CAD 21.00 to CAD 63.70)

Here are our recommendations for when to consider these alternative platforms:

  • Shopify is ideal if you want a dedicated eCommerce solution to quickly build an online store.
  • Squarespace is a great all-in-one option that heavily focuses on all things design and imagery.
  • WordPress gives you the most customization options through its vast array of integrations and themes and its open-source nature.
  • Weebly is another easy-to-use, affordable solution, though quite limited in terms of customization.

Wix is a great user-friendly website builder. Even someone with zero tech experience can successfully use it. I do think it’s worth it for anyone building a new website.
