Keeping Energy Costs Down While Working Remotely

Record numbers of people are working from home (even for retailers) , which is convenient for some and inconvenient for others. Keeping down the costs down while you working remotely will really help you save some money. It is important to keep your power usage down to work remotely without greatly increasing your bills. With the world moving online, energy bills are going up. Luckily there are a few things you can do to cut down on your power usage and decrease your bills.

Turn Things Off

It may sound simple, but the best place to get started is to turn things off when you are not using them. Just by being home we use more energy. Residential internet usage has soared 40 percent in areas affected by Coronavirus. We are all guilty of leaving the lights on or running the TV when we are not using it. The first thing you should do when you are trying to decrease the amount of energy you are using is to turn electronics and appliances off. If something is on standby mode, turn it off. There is no reason to keep running something you aren’t using. Get started today by turning them off.

Heating

Heating is perhaps the most expensive use of energy. If you are working at home, you might be using your thermostat more. If you can leave the heat off and layer with clothes and blankets, you will save a lot of money on your bills during this time. Leaving your heat off will save you a lot of money, but so will buying a smart thermostat. Investing in a product like this will provide the peace of mind you need to begin saving some real money. You will be able to control the temperature of your house remotely and work towards lessening your impact on the environment of the planet.

Hot Water

Hot water combined with heating account for about 62 percent of the money you spend on power a year. Another costly appliance in your home is your water heater. First you should think about where your water heater is placed. This can have a significant impact on how much money you are spending. For example, if the water heater is far from the bathroom it will cost you more money to heat the water. You can also reduce the amount of hot water you are using.

Spend Time Outside

Another simple tip is to spend more time outside. It may seem obvious, but turning off the computer, TV, phone, tablet, and other electronic devices will help you save a lot of money. Plus during this time of quarantine, we all need to get out of the house and spend some time in the fresh air. Walking costs no money, sunlight is free. Turn on lights less and use natural light more.

Invest in Renewable Energy

You can also invest in the future by purchasing things like solar panels. Investing in green energy will make your bills cheaper in the long run. You can not only use solar energy to light your home, you can use it to power it and decrease your bills. The same goes for solar USB ports and other gadgets that can help you mitigate power usage.

Switch Suppliers

If you have been with your power supplier for more than two years, they have likely raised your price without you knowing it according to MoneyPug, which is used as an energy comparison site. It is key for you to know how much you are being charged. It is important to get quotes from other providers. There is no reason to pay more than you should. Use this extra time to find an energy provider that will offer you a fair price.

Lighting

Another thing you can do with your extra free time is to switch to LED light bulbs. There’s no reason you should be using traditional incandescent light bulbs. Not only do LEDS last much longer, they will pay for themselves again and again. Needless to say they are much more efficient. During this quarantine period, you can change your light bulbs and start saving money.

As it turns out, there are many ways for you to decrease the amount of money you are paying each month on energy. You simply have to put in the time. With these tips you will be able to save a lot money and do your best to mitigate your impact on the environment. Let’s get started!
