Gig Workers Are Tracking Customers Who Reduce Tips After Delivery by Marking Their Homes on Google Maps
August 18, 2023
Gig workers for delivery apps like Instacart are resorting to marking houses of “tip baiters,” customers who promise generous tips but later reduce or eliminate them after delivery, on Google Maps. These workers, who often rely heavily on tips for income due to low base pay, are using this method to help fellow colleagues avoid taking orders from such customers. However, Google is reportedly removing these labels, stating that they should represent real, public businesses, and that the company is in the process of removing such listings that don’t comply with their policies.
