Archetype Acquires Cheddar News From Altice USA
December 29, 2023
Archetype, a prominent media company run by private equity firm Regent LP, has recently acquired the business news streaming platform Cheddar News. The deal, finalized Thursday, marks a significant move for both parties, with Cheddar News set to benefit from Archetype’s robust media portfolio.
Since its novel inception in 2016 — broadcasting from an iPhone — Cheddar News has dramatically changed how millennials consume television news. It quickly became a game changer with its innovative approach, positioning itself as the quintessential independent “Voice of What’s Next.” The streaming platform is known for putting its audience at the forefront, enabling consumers to stay informed and engaged in an increasingly dynamic sphere.
Archetype, with its enormous media reach, provides a fitting environment for Cheddar News to expand the boundaries of its influence even further. This acquisition will allow Cheddar News to tap into a larger audience base and continue empowering the company in its quest to understand the world.
Meanwhile, Altice USA can now sharpen its focus on its core operations, which include telecommunications, advanced advertising, and hyperlocal news businesses. The decision to sell Cheddar News to Archetype is viewed by Keith Bowen, president of Altice USA news, advertising, and programming, as a strategic move that will propel the network to greater heights. The deal entails an advantageous clause for Altice USA, stipulating that Regent LP will make future payments if Cheddar News hits specific viewership and other performance milestones.
Cheddar News, conceived by former BuzzFeed executive Jon Steinberg in 2016, was designed as a financial streaming news network catering to millennials. It was acquired by Altice USA in 2019 for a whopping $200 million. With the advent of this deal, Cheddar News now finds itself among other prestigious media holdings of Archetype, including Sightline Media Group, which supervises military news publications like Military Times, as well as Sunset Magazine and HistoryNet, a publisher of magazines exploring various eras of American history.
