California composting becomes law as of Jan. 1

California’s new Senate Bill 1383 will be rolled out gradually across the state by locale, but ultimately the law requires that residents and businesses dispose of their organic waste in separate receptacles so that it can be collected and composted for reuse. Further, by 2025, the bill sets an objective, primarily with supermarkets in mind, of recovering 20 percent of still-edible food to be diverted to food banks instead of land fills.
