Thieves Reportedly Stole $500,000 of Olive Oil After Drought Boosted Prices, Turning It Into ‘Liquid Gold’
September 7, 2023
Thieves in Spain made off with $500,000 worth of extra virgin olive oil as prices for the liquid gold have surged due to drought and reduced production. The theft, which involved at least 50,000 liters of olive oil stored in a warehouse, prompted an investigation by the country’s Civil Guard. Spain’s olive oil production has dropped by 50% compared to the previous year, driving up prices by approximately 15% in Spanish supermarkets.
