Blue Ridge Beef Recalls Pet Food Due to Salmonella and Listeria

In the wake of a string of nationwide recalls, the reputable pet food manufacturer, Blue Ridge Beef is the latest to join the list. The company, on Dec. 21, announced a voluntary recall of three of its pet food varieties following contamination concerns, as confirmed by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Reports indicate that the recall was initiated following positive test results for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes on Dec. 15. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services confirmed the contamination after analyzing product samples. Even though only one lot of each type revealed the presence of these bacteria, a precautionary approach led Blue Ridge Beef to recall all lots with the numbers and use-by dates ranging from N24 1124 to N24 1224.

The recalled pet food products include 2-pound bags of Kitten Grind, Kitten Mix, and Puppy Mix, produced between Nov. 14 and Dec. 20, 2023. These were packaged in clear plastic and distributed to retailers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

The presence of Salmonella and Listeria in pet food is a cause for concern because it poses risks to both pets and their owners. The FDA warns that even seemingly healthy pets can become carriers of these bacteria, potentially infecting humans. Symptoms of such infections in humans include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. More severe cases may even require hospitalization or can be fatal.

Pets are also susceptible to infections, with symptoms such as vomiting, fever, loss of appetite, decreased activity level, and diarrhea — sometimes bloody. Pet owners noticing any such signs should consult their veterinarian immediately.

As of now, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the contaminated products. However, consumers possessing these recalled products are urged to dispose of the food securely to prevent access to children, pets, and wild animals.
