New Klarna Browser Extension Lets Shoppers Access BNPL Anywhere Online

Klarna browser extension

Klarna has launched a new browser extension that enables consumers shopping on desktop computers to access its buy now, pay later service at any online store, even if the retailer is not a Klarna partner.

The extension had been in beta testing with more 100,000 consumers and is now available on Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge in the U.S., UK, Germany and France. Support for Firefox and Safari will be rolled out in the near future, as will availability in the rest of Klarna’s markets.

The new offering is being powered by Klarna’s recent acquisition of Piggy, a browser extension that automatically applies coupons and cashback offers to online purchases.

Despite the recent growth in mobile shopping, desktop still accounts for 32% of all ecommerce traffic, according to SaleCycle. The new Klarna browser extension caters to these shoppers through the creation of one-time virtual Visa cards that enable consumers to securely shop with Klarna at all of their favorite online retailers.

Other features of the Klarna browser extension include:

  • Saved collections and price drops: A “collection” feature allows consumers to save any item they find on the browser to personal folders and activate price drop notifications on those items;
  • Automatic couponing: Consumers can ensure they’re getting the most for their money by having coupon codes automatically added into shopping carts; and
  • Cashback and gift card rewards: Customers with the browser extension installed will also have access to exclusive rewards for purchases at merchants in the form of cashback (U.S. and Germany) or gift cards (UK and France).

Whenever a consumer makes a purchase or saves an item with the browser extension, it is automatically reflected in their Klarna app, where they can access additional post-purchase features such as delivery tracking, managing returns and tracking their carbon footprint.

“While mobile shopping is surging, we also see that many consumers still enjoy the comfort of browsing and comparing items on a larger desktop screen,” said David Fock, Chief Product Officer at Klarna in a statement. “With the introduction of our browser extension, consumers shopping on their desktop can now benefit from the convenience, control and flexibility of Klarna’s ‘Pay Later’ services at all of their favorite online stores. Combined with the automatic couponing and cash back features, our new extension offers the ultimate shopping hack, saving time and money for consumers at every checkout.”
