If you’re a Wix user (or you’re thinking about becoming one), listen up because you might be interested to know that Wix.com boasts its own payment provider: Wix Payments.

If this is something you think could benefit your business, you’re in the right place because we’re revealing everything you need to know about this payment gateway.

There are lots to cover, so let’s hop to it!

What’s Wix Payments?

wix payments homepage

As we’ve just said in the intro, Wix Payments is Wixโ€™s own payment provider. As a Wix user, you can utilize this to accept online credit and debit card payments – just like you would with, say, PayPal or Stripe. On top of that, you can also process payments using iDeal, Sofort payments, and Pay Now by Klarna.

However, the critical difference is that Wix Payments is developed by Wix for Wix, which ensures 100% compatibility. Plus, it also allows you to manage everything from the convenience of one place rather than getting third-party platforms or plugins involved.

Gone are the days where you had to flick between several tabs to manage your eCommerce business. Instead, you can get Wix to do the heaviest lifting, which undoubtedly creates a more streamlined experience for online sellers.

In short, Wix Payments furnishes digital merchants with a secure, quick, and above all else, a convenient payment method for customers to utilize, which you can handle from one centralized dashboard.

Unsurprisingly, Wix Payments is one of the primary payment methods you can offer customers on your Wix site. That alongside PayPal, the processing of manual payments (i.e., accepting cash, cheque, and other offline payments), and Square’s card reader (which accepts credit card payments via the Wix Mobile app).

What Can You Do with Wix Payments?

As well as accepting payments via your website, you can also:

  • Keep an eye on all your transactions from the convenience of your Wix dashboard.
  • Manage your businessโ€™ payout schedule
  • Process refunds
  • Handle chargebacks
  • Set up differing billing methods like memberships and subscriptions

Best of all, Wix Payments doesn’t hit you with extra transaction fees when you use a third-party payment gateway, which is typical of some of Wix’s competitors (*Cough* Shopify).

At this point, it’s also worth noting, Wix Payments empowers you to accept payments from all major credit card companies, including:

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • Discover
  • AMEX
  • Diners
  • CUP
  • JCB
  • Maestro

And, as we’ve just alluded to, you can offer customers Wix Payments alongside other payment providers. If you’re looking to boost your conversion rate, offering customers various payment options is wise. If you’re a US merchant, you can also provide the following options at checkout:

  • PayPal
  • AliPay
  • Manual payments
  • POS

Wix Payments Pros and Cons

First, let’s look at the pros of using Wix Payments:

The Pros ๐Ÿ‘

  • It’s free and easy for Wix users to set up.
  • You can process secure online customer payments.
  • You can accept credit and debit cards, iDeal and Pay Now by Klarna.
  • You can handle payouts, customer payments, refunds, and chargebacks from one centralized dashboard. So there’s no need to leave Wix to check your funds or conduct any other payment gateway-related tasks.
  • You don’t have to bother finding and using a third-party payment gateway.
  • You get access to high-class 24-hour Wix support, including a callback service that operates across a variety of languages. Or you can contact Wix via one of their social media channels. (There are other support channels available, but we don’t have time to list them all here).
  • You’ll provide a better user experience for customers – they can check out on your own domain without being redirected elsewhere.
  • You’re not billed chargeback fees…unlike Shopify Payments who hit you with $15 for every chargeback you process.
  • You’re not tied to just using Wix Payments. You can still offer customers other payment gateways like PayPal (for a more extensive list, see above).
  • There’s a built-in dispute functionality. This enables you (and/or your team) to speedily monitor and respond to any chargebacks and/or customer disputes. Most notably, you can manage, accept, or dispute a chargeback right from your Wix Payments dashboard.

The Cons ๐Ÿ‘Ž

Now, let’s look at the drawbacks:

  • Wix Payments isn’t available in every country. In fact, itโ€™s limited to various European countries, the UK, the USA, and Brazil.
  • There’s an extensive list of restricted/prohibited businesses – including what most would consider pretty innocent items, like herbal incense. So, you’ll definitely need to double-check whether you’re permitted to use Wix Payments before going to the effort of signing up and verifying your account.
  • You must complete the setup process within 30 days of receiving your first payment. Failure to do so results in any payments you’ve received being refunded to your customers.

Wix Payments Pricing

As we’ve already mentioned, you’ll need to purchase a Wix eCommerce / business plan to get up and running with Wix Payments.

There are four pricing plans to choose from:

  • The Business Basic Plan ($23 a month) This is ideal for small businesses and companies looking to get started with accepting online payments.
  • The Business Unlimited Plan ($27 a month): This is Wix’s most popular package and is best for business owners looking to grow their company.
  • The Business VIP Plan ($49 a month): This is the package for you if you wish to unlock all of Wix’s features.
  • The Enterprise Plan: This is best for larger enterprises in need of a bespoke solution. If that sounds like you, you’ll need to contact Wix directly to receive a customized quote.

While we’re on the subject of money, Wix Payments:

  • Is free to use
  • Is free to set up
  • There aren’t any fees for processing refunds or handling chargebacks.

That said, there’s a standard processing fee of 2.9%  plus $0.30 per transaction when you accept credit and debit card payments. In comparison to competitors like PayPal and Stripe, this seems reasonable, as they, too, charge the same 2.9% + $0.30 fee.

What Can You Use Wix Payments With?

Unsurprisingly, you can use Wix Payment with most of Wix’s services, including:

  • Wix Stores
  • Wix Invoices
  • Wix Bookings
  • Wix Art Store
  • Wix Music
  • Wix Video
  • Wix Events
  • Wix’s Paid Plans
  • Corvid by Wix

How to Create a Wix Payments Account

Before we delve into the nitty-gritty of this section, we have to mention that Wix Payments isn’t available to all its users. First off, you must:

  • Have a published Wix website
  • Have purchased a Wix payment plan that allows you to accept online payments, i.e., any Wix Business/ eCommerce plan
  • Operate from a supported country
  • Comply with Wixโ€™s restricted list of products/ services/ business types

If you meet these pre-requisites – great, you can start creating a Wix Payments account by following the steps below:

  1. Log into your Wix account.
  2. Head to your Wix dashboard, and select ‘Accept Payments’
  3. Under Wix Payments, hit ‘Complete Setup.’
  4. Double-check that the products you’re selling don’t breach Wix’s ‘Restricted & Prohibited Products and Services list.’
  5. Select your business type: Individual/Sole Proprietorship/Partnership/Ltd/Liability Co./Corporation/NGO
  6. Enter your business details: Your company ID, address, bank details, and any other info specified.
  7. When you’re finished, select ‘Submit.’
  8. You’ll then be asked to complete a verification process to get up and running.

Voila, that’s it. Once you’ve done all the above, you’re good to go!

Security and Compliance

Rest assured, Wix Payments is a fully secure and compliant payment gateway. It boasts ‘advanced online encryption’ and adheres to the ‘strictest compliance standards.’ Most notably, it provides PSD2 SCA and PCI-compliant payment processing. Alternatively, if you’re selling via your website or app, you get access to HTTPS/TLS data encryption. On top of that, Wix uses an AI-fuelled, rule-based risk system, eliminating the likelihood of common fraudulent attacks posing a threat.

Billing Methods Supported By Wix Payments

As we’ve already hinted at, you can use Wix Payments to process instant online customer transactions when they pay using a credit or debit card, iDeal, Giropay, or Pay Now by Klarna. On top of that, you can also launch recurring billing cycles that enable you to sell memberships, subscriptions, and packages. Wix Payments also supports ‘pay as you go billing’ too!

You can set up and offer customers these different billing methods no matter the device they’re using and irrespective of whether they’re using your website or app.

FAQs

We thought we’d wrap up this review by answering some of the most frequently asked questions we hear about Wix Payments:

What’s a Chargeback?

A chargeback is when a customer purchases something from your online store, then they request a refund (for whatever reason). You then process the refund/the chargeback so that the customer’s funds are returned to them. That, in a nutshell, is a chargeback.

What Countries and Currencies Do Wix Payments Support?

As we’ve already said, Wix Payments isnโ€™t available in every country. Below is a list of the 14 countries (and their currencies) it supports:

  • Austria: EUR
  • Belgium: EUR
  • Brazil: BRL
  • Finland: EUR
  • Germany: EUR
  • Ireland: EUR
  • Italy: EUR
  • Lithuania: EUR
  • Netherland: EUR
  • Portugal: EUR
  • Spain: EUR
  • Switzerland: CHF
  • UK: GBP
  • USA: USD

Compared to Wix Payments’ competitors, the number of countries and currencies it supports is pretty small – especially when you consider PayPal operates in over 200 countries! As such, Wix Payments might not be the best choice for international selling. Or, at the very least, you’ll want to offer international customers alternative payment methods in addition to Wix Payments.

What’s On Wix’s Restricted Products/Services List?

As we’ve already said, there are numerous products and services you can’t sell using Wix Payments; more specifically, you can’t sell anything regarding:

  • Activities involving weapons
  • Adult entertainment
  • Gambling
  • Airlines
  • Animal and wildlife products
  • Auctions

…To name a few. There are roughly 53 prohibited niches in total.

On top of that, there are also business types that, although they can use Wix Payments, they have to get written permission first – for instance, ticket agencies, charities, and car sales. Again, you’ll want to check whether this applies to your business before diving straight in.

How Long Does Wix Take to Pay You?

Before you can receive funds from Wix Payments, Wix has to process every customer’s credit card payment. This involves a ‘settlement period and a pending period.’ In total, this typically takes between two and five days before it’s available for payout.

Once the customer payment is successfully processed, Wix sends the payout using the bank details you’ve provided. From that point, the funds should appear in your bank account within three to five business days. At this stage, the speed you can access the funds is entirely dependent on your bank.

If you’ve verified your account, your payout should be available within five business days after receiving your first transaction. After your first transaction is successfully processed, you can choose your desired payout cycle: daily, weekly, or monthly.

You can monitor when your first payout’s due via your Wix Payments dashboard.

Here’s a little more info about each of these payout cycles:

  • Daily: As you’ve probably guessed, this is when payouts are sent every day. This also includes any transactions that were processed the day prior that came through after the cut-off time.
  • Weekly payouts are sent on Monday’s by default. However, you can pick whatever day works best for you from your Wix Payments account settings.
  • Monthly: Likeweekly payouts, monthly payouts are sent on the 1st of each month as default. However, you can edit this to whatever day of the month best suits you via your account settings.

At this point, it’s worth noting; you can chop and change your payout cycle whenever you like – you’re never locked in. Just head to your Wix Payments account settings and make whatever changes best meet your business needs.

Bear in mind; the daily payout cut-off time varies depending on your location. For instance, if you’re based in the US, it’s 6 AM EST, and if you’re residing in Europe, it’s 6 AM GMT. Also, where a month has less than 29 days, monthly payouts go out on the last day of the month.

Is Shopify Payments Better?

When you consider that Shopify is (arguably) the reigning champion of eCommerce platforms, it’s only natural to compare Shopify Payments (Shopify’s in-built payment processor) and Wix Payments. You might be surprised to hear that Wix Payments comes out pretty favorably.

Both gateways charge merchants similar transaction fees. That said, Wix is slightly more expensive at 2.9%, whereas Shopify Payments only charges 2.4%.

However, we have to remember that Shopify imposes extra charges if you use alternative payment gateways other than Shopify Payments. These fees fluctuate from 0.5% to 2.0% depending on the subscription plan youโ€™ve opted for. When you consider that like Wix Payments, Shopify Payments also isn’t available in all countries, which means you could be hit with two sets of transaction fees without an option for a reprieve! Conversely, Wix Payments doesn’t charge you for using a third-party payment gateway, which in our opinion, gives it a slight edge over Shopify Payments.

Is There a Minimum Charge Amount?

In short, yes. However, the minimum charge varies depending on your location/currency. To give you an idea, we’ve listed some of the minimum charges below:

  • United States: 1 USD
  • Brazil: 1 BRL
  • Europe: 1 EUR
  • UK: 1 GBP
  • Switzerland: 1 CHF

How Do Wix Payments Work In Brazil?

Interestingly, Wix‘s online payments in Brazil operate a tad differently. For example, it supports installments, and you can accept payments with Boleto. This is unique to Brazil, as this doesn’t apply to other locations at the time of writing.

Our Final Thoughts

When it comes to online customer payments, one thing is for sure; you must offer a choice. That way, the consumer can pick whichever payment method they feel most comfortable with – which, as you can imagine, has a direct bearing on your conversion rates.

This is one reason we love Wix Payments: it doesn’t penalize you for offering customers a choice of payment gateways. Then, when you consider it’s free to set up, use, and there aren’t any chargeback fees involved, it’s a big thumbs up from us. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by using it with your Wix site, providing it’s available to you.

Have you ever used Wix Payments? Or, are you considering using it for your eCommerce website/app? Either way, tell us all about your experience with Wix website builder in the comments box below. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
