Saks Gives Beauty Product Containers a Second Life with Recycling Program

Saks has partnered with TerraCycle to launch the Saks Beauty Recycling program, which will let shoppers send in empty beauty containers through Saks.com or drop them at select Saks Fifth Avenue stores across the U.S. to give them a second life. The waste will be sorted by composition, (e.g. plastics and metals), then consolidated and sent for processing to be used as raw material for products such as furniture or gardening equipment.

Shoppers can choose to mail in eligible empty containers using prepaid shipping labels available on Saks.com or use designated in-store drop off containers. The program accepts empty hair care, skin care and cosmetic packaging from all brands and retailers and is open to all individuals and groups.

“At Saks, we recognize that our day-to-day decisions can have a significant impact on our environment,” said Cara Chacon, SVP, Environmental, Social and Governance at Saks in a statement. “With our partnership with TerraCycle, we hope to inspire our customers to join us in these initial efforts to reduce waste caused by difficult-to-recycle packaging and keep otherwise non-recyclable plastic packaging out of landfills.”

“With the launch of this sustainable initiative, Saks is encouraging their customers to reduce waste by providing them with two unique opportunities to responsibly recycle their hair care, skin care and cosmetic packaging,” said Tom Szaky, CEO and Founder of TerraCycle in a statement. “The innovative collaboration between Saks and TerraCycle allows consumers to seamlessly divert traditionally non-recyclable beauty waste from landfills.”

TerraCycle is working with a number of retailers to power recycling and upcycling programs. Other major partnerships include:

  • Walmart and P&G, which offer free in-store recycling collection for beauty packaging at 25 Walmart locations in four states;
  • Boxed, which lets customers recycle packaging for any brand of home essentials and personal care products by mailing in waste using a prepaid shipping label available online; and
  • Kroger, which launched a program with TerraCycle’s circular reuse platform Loop to offer more products using refillable plastic packaging at 25 Fred Meyer stores in metro Portland, Ore.
