Andy Campbell of Go Local Extra (Hursthead Convenience) in Cheadle, Greater Manchester, told Talking Retail’s WhatsApp group that sales were superb all over the weekend. “The weather helped,” he said, and “Easter products were all sold out by Saturday morning.”

Jack Matthews, owner of Bradley’s Supermarket in Quorn, near Loughborough, said his store had “the strongest week since the panic buying. The good weather and Easter helped drive sales all over the store.”

Anita Nye, Premier Eldred Drive Stores in Orpington, Kent, said the business had a fantastic Easter. “Sale were £2,600 up for the Sunday. All eggs were gone by Saturday morning,” she added.

In addition, Samantha Coldbeck, of Wharfedale Premier, Hull, told Talking Retail that she daren’t hope for an Easter as good as last year, but “we smashed it again”.

“Alcohol and tobacco consumption was off the scale for obvious reasons, but people just can’t get enough of their local independents. Hope it lasts,” she said.

Sue Nithyanandan, who runs a Costcutter in Epsom, Surrey, said the whole week of Easter was very good. “It has been consistently busy all week. The second highest week since before lockdown. At least the shop still looks decent this time around,” she added.

Meanwhile, Nisa partner PGNJ, tweeted: “Thank you to Nisa Retail we had an excellent Easter extra sales surge in all of our newly converted stores, and it’s not over yet.”
