While the 2020 holiday season was challenging for most retailers, online retail sales grew by $40 billion. In 2021, even with consumers returning to stores and spending more on travel and restaurants, online sales this holiday season will grow by close to $20 billion.

Our recently published 2021 US online holiday retail sales forecast outlines some of the details, including:

  • US online holiday retail sales will reach just under $200 billion in 2021. Despite facing tough comparisons to the 2020 holiday season, online retail will grow 10% this year. Mass vaccinations have helped in-store sales but also haven’t dented online sales.
  • Supply issues will impact the entire retail market, but major retailers have prepared. Online sales this holiday retail season will be impacted by increased out-of-stocks and higher shipping times. Consumers will still spend more online this year regardless.
