A police statement said they were called to the News and Booze store on Lower House Lane, Norris Green, after a report that a gun had been fired.

The police added that a man had threatened the shop assistant and demanded cash before firing a gun into the ceiling. Nobody was injured.

Later on the same evening shots were fired outside a nearby cinema and in a local residential area.

Yesterday (Thursday) the police said they had arrested a 49-year-old suspect on suspicion of the shootings.

The shop assistant was not injured during the incident but said by police to be “extremely distressed” by the ordeal.

The arrested man remains in custody but has not been charged, police said this morning (Friday).
