Spar store in hit by huge fire

Firefighters spent more than 15 hours battling a major blaze at a Spar store in Motherwell.

Residents reported seeing flames tearing through the building in Merry Street on Sunday night (19 July). No casualties have been reported.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 6.26pm on Sunday, 19 July to reports of a fire within a building on Merry Street, Motherwell.

“Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances and one aerial appliance to the scene where firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.”

A Spar spokesperson told Talking Retail: “We are aware of a fire reported on Sunday 19 July at a Spar store in Merry Street, Motherwell. Scottish Fire and Rescue Services ensured the incident was contained and we are working with the store team to investigate further.”

MSP Richard Lyle was on the scene to help local residents.
