He scooped the first prize in the retailer incentive part of the Summer Fun Sorted promotion by achieving a 1,227% sales uplift in terms of Swizzels Squashies business during the two-month period.

“I made sure I had plenty of stock in and sat down with my team to work through the plan. At the till, the team would ask customers if they wanted a bag of Squashies and would upsell where they could. It went from one bag to two or three extra bags, then six or seven at a time and one customer even bought a box for a birthday party.”

He also used social media to attract shoppers to his store in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. “With 12,000 Facebook followers from a local audience on our page, my role was to shout about it on social media. I took pictures of the sweets and it helped create awareness and a buzz.” His prize includes £100 of Love to Shop vouchers and a Swizzels hamper to enjoy with his team.

The retailer incentive was part of the Tesco-owned chain’s promotion giving shoppers the chance to win prizes during July and August. “The campaign created real excitement in-store and the point-of-sale and banners were good quality with sharp colours.

Our last symbol group sent us posters that were folded and we put them up in the window with blue tack which looked tacky. One Stop sent us quality banners with pre-made holes which means promotions are just easier for customers to see. It’s the little things that make the store look so much smarter.”
