Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Dumfries and Galloway, who extinguished the fire in the Scott Street area of Kelloholm, near Sanquhar, said it was not an accident. Police were called to assist and the incident is now being investigated.

Detective constable Thomas Dingwall, of Dumfries CID, said: “This small shop is in the heart of the community and luckily nobody was hurt.

“Our enquiries so far indicate that a man dressed in dark clothing was seen forcing entry to the shop. We cannot have this kind of thing happening in our communities so if you have any information whatsoever no matter how minor you may think please get in touch.”

A spokesperson for Nisa added: “Fortunately all damage was external and nothing structural and so after a little disruption first thing, the store was able to trade following day.”
