Retailers should ensure their closed circuit television (CCTV) systems meet UK police requirements, the British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) said this week.

Bira issued its guidance in response to what it called “the alarming increase in retail crime” across the country.

Questions addressed by UK police guidance include whether the quality of recording is good enough, how it should be stored, and whether authorised third parties can access it easily. The full guidance is available via the Bira website

The surge in retail crime has become a growing concern for independent retailers, prompting Bira to make this week’s efforts in collaboration with the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC).

The document offers insights into the latest guidelines set by the UK police for the effective implementation and maintenance of CCTV systems.

Bira says that by adhering to these guidelines, retailers can significantly enhance their security, helping to prevent and solve crime.
