The event, which is taking place today (3 November), aims to increase awareness of the value and the needs of disabled customers. The programme is free for organisations to take part in and involves making at least one new commitment to improve customer experience for disabled people.

These commitments include: completing a Site Access Audit, providing customer service training, providing staff with British Sign Language training, and formalising quiet hours.

ACS chief executive, James Lowman, said: “Local shops are a lifeline for the communities that they serve and are committed to ensuring that they can provide vital products and services to all of their customers, particularly those who may be more vulnerable or isolated.

“The coronavirus pandemic has had a dramatic impact on all aspects of society and it’s important to remember that some customers may need additional support through this difficult time.”

Retailers can download ACS’ Supporting Vulnerable Customers guide which provides retailers with best practice advice on how to better support vulnerable customers and colleagues in-store.

ACS is also highlighting best practice information for retailers on how to support blind and partially sighted customers, developed by the Royal National Institute of Blind People.
