With the annual celebration of love fast approaching, couples new and old are making plans to celebrate with a romantic dinner.

The discount retailer looked into the dining habits of Scottish shoppers to find out the favourite dishes to enjoy with loved ones.

Engaging 1,000 respondents, it found that nearly two-thirds (65%) are set to stay at home this Valentine’s Day, with less than a fifth (18%) opting to go out for the special occasion.

Highlighting the ongoing impact of the cost-of-living crisis, the main reason for an at-home date night was the overpriced meals around Valentine’s Day (40%) and not wanting to spend money on dining out (31%).

Steak dominated as the most popular dine-in dish for men and women in Scotland, closely followed by pasta which was revealed as the top romantic dinner choice for two in five (41%) of respondents aged 16-24 years old.

Graham Nicolson, group buying director, Aldi Scotland, said: “Food plays such an important role in modern dating and the age-old phrase “the way to a man – and woman’s – heart is through their stomach” really does ring true.”
