Integration with payment gateways was almost non-existent, with most people relying on Pay Now buttons from Paypal. One notable exception was a plugin call WP-eCommerce. WP-eCommerce is the only plugin that converted as opposed to simply giving up and going away. 2011: WooCommerce is Born. That plugin still exists.
